I am seeking any information on and/or leading to the 1972 Chevelle Malibu SS454 that I bought new in Detroit when I was 19 years old. Unfortunately, as a result of a somewhat misspent youth, I have no ID information for this car such as the VIN. However I have a detailed story to tell...

This car was special ordered by me, from and delivered by Emmert Chevrolet, located on Grand River Avenue at Evergreen Road, in Detroit, MI (out of business well over 20 years ago). The MSRP was about $4,300.00. It was equipped with the 454 engine, automatic trans with column shift, and Positraction differential. I spec'd the following: Midnight Bronze exterior (no stripes), black vinyl top, tinted windshield and side glass, power steering, power disc brakes, possibly power windows and door locks, bench seat (can't remember if it was cloth or vinyl or power), AM/FM radio (may have also included tape player), air conditioning, remote mirror. I suspect I added several other options as I had this idea to spec a "Luxury" muscle car with everything I could add, except I didn't want buckets or console (girlfriend needed to be close), stripes, I don't remember ordering cowl induction. I don't know how rare a color Midnight Bronze was for '72, but in 39 years I've only ever come across one other '72 SS 454 Malibu in this color, and it had a white vinyl top and white bucket seat interior. Maybe this color rarity, with automatic, bench seat, and loaded with options would make it easy to identify without the VIN.....

I drove the car for a year or two, then after several speeding tickets, when insurance rates skyrocketed, I traded it to my parents for their 1967 Pontiac Catalina. I hate to admit it but my Dad only saw cars as a transportation tool and tended to just use them up, as he did with my SS 454 Malibu. By the time he traded it in at Penske Chevrolet on Telegraph at 11 Mile Rd. in Southfiled, MI, (two subsequent owners and closed up several years ago, so no sales records to research) around 1975 or 6, it was drinking and leaking oil after he'd run it out of oil half a dozen times, the steering was really screwed up after a couple of really deep pot hole incursions, and the body had its share of road rash. I would guess that Penske gave the car away and somebody probably scrapped the engine instead of trying to save it, and who knows what might have become of the remainder of the car.... but I thoroughly rustproofed the Malibu with Tuff-Kote Rustproofing (my dad was the very first Tuff-Kote franchised outlet in 1962) when it was new so the body may very well have survived without much rust, if even in a scrap yard.

I suppose this is a pipe dream, but who knows, maybe someone will read this and connect a couple dots, or more accurately, connect a couple of decades, and the car will surface somewhere....can you help???????James Giovanni at jamesgiovanni@att.net
