1970 Chevelle Tachometer Broadcast Codes

Broadcast code 938 - redline 5000 - L65 and L48 350cid engines
Broadcast code 983 - redline 6500 - L78 and LS6 396/454cid engines
Broadcast code 985 - redline 5500 - LS3, L34, and LS5 402/396/454cid engines

Three different tachometer ranges were offered in 1970. One for small-block V8s with the redline at 5000 (code 938), one for the L34 and LS5 (code 985) with the redline at 5500, and one for the L78 and LS6 (code 983) with a redline at 6500. The computer programmers at Atlanta made an error and coded the LS5 engine for the 5000 redline (code 938) tachometer through at least April of 1970. It has also been reported that early Baltimore L78 Chevelles were coded for the correct 6500 redline (code 983) but came equipped with the 5000 redline 938 unit.

Atlanta is the only plant to code the (incorrect) 938 tachometer for the LS5 in all instances so far. I have one very early Van Nuys Monte Carlo LS5 (09-16) with a 938 tachometer as well.
